3 Wochen, 7520 km, Regen, Schnee, Sonnenschein, Berge, Seen, Küsten und Wüsten – das war meine unvergessliche Motorradtour durch Neuseeland! Von Auckland über den Milford Sound bis hin zu den Gletschern am West Coast.

Zwei Jahre in Shanghai, China zu verbringen war eine großartige Erfahrung. Die Großstadt bot viel Unterhaltung, Essen und Kultur. Allerdings war der Zugang zur Natur begrenzt und es gab den Wunsch, „Grün“ zu berühren, zu fühlen, zu atmen und zu sehen. Neuseeland schien ein guter Ort zu sein, um vor der Rückkehr nach München, Deutschland, zu besuchen.
Der Zeitplan war von Mitte September bis Mitte Oktober festgelegt, genau am Ende des Winters in Neuseeland. Eine Reise in eigenem Tempo, mit der Freiheit, Ziele auf dem Weg zu besuchen – mit dem Motorrad – bietet ein intensives Engagement mit der Natur. Die Wetterbedingungen waren unsicher, daher packten Sie für sehr kaltes bis warmes Wetter. Als Sie am 17. September in Auckland ankamen, betrug die Temperatur etwa 10°C, was von den Einheimischen als angenehm empfunden wurde. Allerdings fanden Sie es ziemlich kühl und nicht geeignet für T-Shirts und Flip-Flops.
Sie verbrachten einige Tage in und um Auckland, um sich anzupassen, bevor Sie Ihr Motorrad bei Kiwi Motorcycle Rentals abholten. Eine schöne BMW R 1200 GS LC mit bereits 65.000 km auf dem Tacho war sehr gut gepflegt und in gutem Zustand. Nach dem Umpacken und Einrichten des Navigationssystems fuhren Sie nach Norden zum Cape Reinga. Es war eine lange, aber einfache Fahrt mit viel zu sehen entlang der Straße, und die Sonne schien, während der Motor einen lebhaften Hintergrundlärm lieferte.
Das Wetter wurde jedoch unvorhersehbar, und in den nächsten acht Tagen regnete es mehr oder weniger kontinuierlich. Die Herausforderung des Tages bestand darin, eine Route zu finden, die Regen vermeidet und der Sonne hinterherjagt. Das Aufstellen des Zeltes im Regen war schrecklich, Sie waren vom Ritt des Tages durchnässt und Ihre Hände waren kalt und ungeschickt. Leider haben Sie aufgrund des Regens und der Wolken wahrscheinlich viele interessante Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der Nordinsel verpasst. Trotzdem waren Cape Reinga, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Lake Taupo und Hell’s Gate großartige Orte zum Besuchen.
Mit der Fähre von Wellington nach Picton kam ich auf die Südinsel. Entlang der Queen Charlotte Drive führte mich die kurvenreiche Straße nach French Pass. Die Schotterstraße war schlammig und rutschig, was zu einer abenteuerlichen Fahrt führte. Wie so oft war ich der Einzige auf dem Campingplatz, und das gesamte Dorf war noch geschlossen.
Weiter südlich wurde das Wetter noch nasser und kälter. An der Ostküste wurde in den kommenden Tagen weniger Regen erwartet. Über den Lewis Pass überquerte ich die Insel Richtung Christchurch. Auf einigen der Off-Road-Touren von Twisting Throttle folgend, war die 32-Random Spur eine echte Herausforderung. Ich blieb auf der Ostseite der Southern Alps und fuhr zum Lake Pukaki und zum Mount Cook. Ein heftiges Unwetter holte mich ein. Wie in einer surrealen Szene glänzte der smaragdgrüne See vor einem dunklen Hintergrund und ein Regenbogen spannte sich über den Himmel.
Ein großes Highlight war die Black Forest Road und die Old Dunstan Road. Erstere, privat besitzt, führt über eine 35 km lange Schotterstraße durch raue Berglandschaften. Die Old Dunstan Road ist eine offizielle Straße, die jedoch im Winter geschlossen ist und nur für Geländefahrzeuge geeignet ist. Von Bergen bis hin zu wüstenähnlichen Ebenen ist die Straße ein echtes Abenteuer.
Die Catlins bieten schöne Straßen entlang der Küste, vorbei an Slope Point und dann nach Norden zum berühmten Milford Sound, wo ich eine Bootsfahrt unternommen habe. Ein großer Fergburger brachte meine Energie zurück.
Queenstown ist ein Hype. Alle Adrenalinkicks-Aktivitäten konzentrieren sich auf diese Stadt. Die Jet-Boot-Tour ist laut und die Skippers Canyon ist aufregend. Über den Haast Pass zur wilden Westküste bot Jackson Bay einen fantastischen Blick auf das Bergpanorama. Fox Glacier und Franz Josef Glacier waren die letzten beiden großen Sehenswürdigkeiten auf dem Weg zurück nach Christchurch.

Spending two years in Shanghai, China was a great experience. The big city provided a lot of entertainment, food, and culture. However, access to nature was limited, and there was a desire to touch, feel, breathe and see “green”. New Zealand seemed like a good place to visit before moving back to Munich, Germany.
The timeline was fixed for mid-September to mid-October, just at the end of New Zealand’s winter. Traveling at your own pace, with the freedom to visit destinations as they come – by motorcycle – provides an intense engagement with nature. Weather conditions were uncertain, so you packed for very cold to warm weather. When arriving in Auckland on the 17th of September, the temperature was around 10°C, which the locals considered comfortable. However, you found it quite chilly and not suitable for t-shirts and flip-flops.
You spent a few days in and around Auckland to adjust before picking up your ride at Kiwi Motorcycle Rentals. A nice BMW R 1200 GS LC, with already 65k km on the clock, was very well maintained and in good shape. After re-packing and fitting the navigation, you drove up north to Cape Reinga. It was a long but easy ride with lots to see along the road, and the sun was shining while the engine provided a lively background noise.
However, the weather became unpredictable, and the next eight days, it was more or less raining continuously. The challenge of the day was to find a route that avoided rainfall and chased the sun. Setting up camp in the rain was terrible, with you soaking wet from the day’s ride and your hands being cold and clumsy. Unfortunately, due to the rain and clouds, you probably missed a lot of interesting sights on the North Island. Nevertheless, Cape Reinga, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Lake Taupo, and Hell’s Gate were great places to visit.
Taking the ferry from Wellington to Picton brought me to the South Island. Along the Queen Charlotte Drive, the winding road took me to French Pass. The gravel road was muddy and slippery, making it an adventurous ride. As so often, I was the only one at the camp, and the entire village was still closed down.
Further south, the weather was still wet and getting colder. The east coast was expected to be drier for the coming days. Via the Lewis Pass, I crossed the island towards Christchurch. Following some of the off-road tours from Twisting Throttle, the 32-Random Spur was a real challenge. Staying on the east side of the Southern Alps, the tour went to Lake Pukaki and Mt. Cook. Some heavy weather caught up with me. Like a surreal scene, the emerald green lake shone in front of a deep dark background, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.
A big highlight was the Black Forest Road and the Old Dunstan Road. The first one, privately owned, takes the bike on a 35km gravel road through some harsh mountain environments. The Old Dunstan Road is an official road; however, it is closed during winter and only suitable for all-terrain vehicles. From mountains to desert-like flats, the road is a real adventure.
The Catlins provide fine roads along the coast, passing Slope Point and then turning north to the famous Milford Sound, where I took a boat cruise. A big Fergburger brought back my energy.
Queenstown is a hype. All adrenaline-kicking activities are centered around this town. The Jet Boat tour is screaming, and the Skippers Canyon is thrilling. Over the Haast Pass to the wild West Coast, Jackson Bay offered a fantastic view of the mountain range. Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier were the last two big sights on the way back to Christchurch.
7520 km, rain, snow, sunshine, mountains, deserts, lakes, and coastlines. Three weeks of soul-finding and adventure. DoingX, that is!
